Richard Dean “Dick” Munk was born in Hays, KS to Joseph and Mary Esther (Schmidt) Munk on April 17, 1943. Dick passed away at his home in Newport, NE on December 3, 2023 at the age of 80 years.
Dick attended school and graduated from Oakley, KS. After graduation, he worked for several neighbors in the area before being drafted into the Army in January of 1964. His basic training was completed at Fort Leonard Wood, after which he was sent to serve in the Vietnam War. Dick was honorably discharged from service in January of 1966.
Following his discharge, Dick returned home and began working for Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Company. One of his work assignments sent him to Bassett, NE, where he met and married Linda Hallsted in 1967. To this union, two children, Brian and Tonya were born. Dick and Linda began farming and ranching with Linda’s parents, Art and Esther Hallsted, at their ranch north of Newport, NE until Linda’s death in 1979.
In December of 1980, Dick married Connie K. Ostrander. This union was blessed with one son, Rich.
Dick continued farming and ranching, which he thoroughly enjoyed. The only thing that he loved more was spending time with his grandchildren Jenna Butts and Todd, Hannah and Dean Munk until his passing.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Esther Munk, wife, Linda; numerous siblings. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Connie of Newport; his three children, Brian Munk (significant other, Jacob Cooper) of Lincoln, NE, Tonya (husband, Bob) Woita of Palmyra, NE, and Richard (wife, Sarah) Munk of Newport; four grandchildren; three brothers, Frank (wife, Lona) Munk of Oakley, Jodie Munk of Oakley, and Craig Munk of Taylor, TX; two sisters, Eloise Tholen of Hays and Barbara Voth of Oakley; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Munk of Russell, KS and Mary York of Oakley; brothers-in-law, Harry Spresser of Hoxie, KS and Jackie (wife, Anne) Ostmeyer of Oakley; along with nieces, nephews and other family members.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bassett with Fr. Mike Wetovick as Celebrant. The congregational hymns of “Amazing Grace”, “One Bread, One Body” and “On Eagles’ Wings” were accompanied by Trudy Nolles. The CD selection “Angels Among Us” by Alabama was also played. Casketbearers were: Loren Ammon, Neil Ammon, Keith Allison, Travis Ammon, Trent Allison and Waylon Reynolds. Interment followed in the Willowdale Cemetery at Newport with military honors by Newport American Legion Post #227and Bassett American Legion Post #123. Memorials were suggested to the Newport American Legion Post #227, Rock County Hospital or to the Rock County Ambulance Association in Dick’s name.
