Michael John Smiley of Bassett, Nebraska was born on November 1, 1962 in Omaha, Nebraska to Jay B. and Rosemary (Taylor) Smiley. He died on September 8, 2021 in Omaha. Michael graduated from Plattsmouth High School in 1981. After graduation he started his family in Omaha, where he lived for a number of years. Later in life he moved to Bassett to live closer to his family and enjoy the small town life. For the last 10 years he worked for the KBR Solid Waste in Ainsworth, Nebraska.
For recreation, he had a variety of hobbies. He spent a lot of time traveling and camping with family. His outdoors activities included fishing and hunting. He enjoyed cooking, grilling, reading and loved a good amusement park. He was also an active member of the Emmanuel Community Church in Bassett and both the Bassett and Ainsworth communities.
Michael is preceded in death by his parents, Jay and Rosemary Smiley and his brother Pat Smiley. Michael is survived by his daughters, Ana Smiley of Gregory, South Dakota and Suzanne Smiley of North Sioux City, South Dakota; granddaughter, Evelyn Miller of Gregory, South Dakota; brother, Thomas (Toni) Smiley of Omaha, Nebraska; numerous extended family members as well as his church family.
A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at the Emmanuel Community Church in Bassett with Pastor Dennis Quigley officiating. A Private Family Inurnment will take place at a later date. Music was provided by Ellen Carpenter and the congregational song “This Is The Day” was sung. The Honorary Urn Bearer is his granddaughter, Evelyn Miller. Memorials were suggested the Emmanuel Community Church or to the family in Michael’s name for future designation.
