Lillian Irene (Haight) Vargason was born on March 24, 1929 to Mirl and Beulah (Brown) Haight in Keya Paha County, Nebraska. Lillian was also known as “Grandma Myrt” or “Auntie Myrt.”
She lived north of Newport, Nebraska, where she attended Simpson School. Lillian attended two years of high school in Newport. She then obtained her GED from Rock County High School at Bassett, Nebraska.
Lillian married Burton Vargason on December 9, 1945 in Winner, South Dakota. They had three children: Connie Marie, Shirley May and Carol Sue. They lived in Keya Paha and Rock Counties for most of their lives; except for the few months they lived in Corpus Christi, Texas. During their marriage, Lillian and Burton ran the Rock County Sheriff’s Office out of their home, where Lillian worked as a dispatcher for many years.
Lillian passed away peacefully in her home on November 7, 2021.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mirl and Beulah Haight; huband, Burton Vargason; daughters, Connie Marie Vargason and Carol Sue Oestmann; great-granddaughter, Heidi Jane Kepler; sister, Betty Brown; brothers, Merlyn and wife (Carol Ann) Haight and Marvin Haight.
Lillian is survived by daughter, Shirley May and husband Clifford Kepler of Bassett; grandchildren, Connie (Robert) Jackson of Bassett, Sandi (Jake) Nelson of Ainsworth, Nebraska and Billy (Ann) Kepler of Newport; great-grandchildren, Bridget and Ty Jackson, Kaitlyn and Carter Nelson, Karlene, Shelby and Toby Kepler; one sister, Janice Scholl of Omaha, Nebraska; a brother-in-law, Ed Brown of Bassett; along with many nieces, nephews, friends and family.
