Mr. Calvin Dale Croghan

Calvin D. Croghan was born on May 8, 1929 to James David and Florence Gertrude (DeBolt) Croghan at Bassett Nebraska, and passed away at the West Holt Memorial Hospital in Atkinson, Nebraska on October 19, 2015. Calvin had four brothers and two sisters.
Cal was inducted into the United States Army on July 6, 1951. He was wounded in combat at Chorwon Korea on September 9, 1952 and was awarded the Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, the United Nations Service Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Purple Heart Medal. Cal was sent back to a Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado and he was discharged on October 20, 1953.
Cal and Virginia Ann Dodds were united in marriage on June 5, 1953 at Denver, Colorado. Three children were born to this union: twin boys, Dale and David; and a girl, Juli.
Cal lived his entire life in Rock and Brown County. He worked at various jobs from blue grass stripping, carpentry, working at the sale barn, land leveling, mechanic, and truck driving. He also owned a bar in Long Pine, Nebraska for a period of time. His hobbies were hunting, fishing and working on old cars with friends. He finished up his career working for the Rock County Road Department.
Cal was preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Gertrude; wife, Virginia who passed away 2002; son, Dale; four brothers, Orval Croghan, David Erwin Croghan, Oscar W. Croghan, Donald F. Croghan; and two sisters, Bessie Mitchell and Gladys Stahl.
Survivors include son, David Croghan and Robin Tuttle of Bassett; daughter, Juli Brown and husband, Dale of Colome, South Dakota; grandchildren, Misti Speidel and husband, Josh of Rapid City, South Dakota, Jason Croghan and wife, Tandi also of Rapid City, Dusty Croghan of Newport Beach, California, Brandi Sharp and husband, Troy of Kansas City, Missouri, Ryan Croghan and wife, Tracy of Omaha, Nebraska along with eight great-grandkids. Sister-in-law, Vivian Hayes of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; along with nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
Funeral services were held on October 23, 2015 at the United Methodist Church in Bassett, Nebraska. Pastor Rod Heilbrun officiated at the service. The CD selections of "Go Rest High On That Mountain" by Vince Gill, "Snowbird" by Anne Murray, and "Daddy Never Was The Cadillac Kind" by Confederate Railroad were provided. Active Casketbearers were Kent Croghan, Heath Croghan, Mike Croghan, Cody Croghan, John Stahl and Greg Haszard. Honorary Casketbearers were Wayne Mattern, Willy Crist, Bud Mitchell, Sam Coulter and all of Cal's other friends and family. Burial with Military Honors by Bassett American Legion Post #123 followed at the Bassett Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Hoch Funeral Home of Bassett.
