Avis Elizabeth (Sawyer) Moore, 93, died April 22, 2018 at Colonial Manor Skilled Nursing Facility of Randolph, Nebraska.
Avis Elizabeth Moore was born on September 7, 1924 in Rock County, Nebraska to Charles and Bessie (Putnam) Sawyer. She grew up on her parent's farm at the confluence of Short Pine and Pine Creek within a short distance from her paternal grandparents, Jacob and Maria Sawyer, and her maternal grandparents, John H. and Sarah Putnam's homesteads. Avis was baptized in Pine Creek as a member of the Cuba Baptist Church. She attended first through eighth grades at Cuba School and then Rock County High School taking a year off to care for her mother who suffered a heart attack. She graduated in 1943 and after taking normal school training taught two years at the Hulshizer School on the Niobrara River and two years at the Rock Creek School Northeast of Bassett.
Avis and Ira J. Moore were married June 22, 1947. She joined the United Methodist Church at Long Pine after marriage. She was devoted to the work of the church teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and helping with the United Methodist Women's Society. She also enjoyed friendships she made in the South Pine Slowpoke Extension Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the card club.
Avis was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Bessie Sawyer; her husband, Ira J. Moore, three infant daughters, Jean, Joyce, and Joanne; three brothers, Lester (Velma), Raymond (Edna), and Herbert (Hazel); and a sister, Nellie (Joe) Schlink.
Avis is survived by her three children, Sherry (Jim) Walker, Kathy Moore, and Steve (Julie) Moore; six grandchildren, Kemmy (Joel) Young, Kayla (David) Yasko, Keya (John) Brown, Jim (Emily) Walker, Matthew Moore, Sara (Kellen) Sayre; 13 great-grandchildren, Jacob Young, Jordan Young, Justin Young, Jenna Young, Kourtney (Robert) Clines, Kaitlyn Brown, Brandon Brown, Kristen Brown, Kyleigh Brown, Camden Walker, Ella Walker, Colten Walker, and Ashley (Brett) Newton; 1 great-great grandchild, Hadley Newton.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2018 at Hoch Funeral Home of Ainsworth, Nebraska with Pastor David Randall officiating the service. Special CD selections of "In the Garden" and "Whispering Hope" by Jim Reeves, and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" by Daniel O'Donnell were provided. Pallbearers were, Blake Harlow, James Walker III, Joel Young, Justin Young, Brandon Brown and Kellen Sayre. Honorary pallbearers were, Kemmy Young, Jacob Young, Kaylo Yasko, David Yasko, Keya Brown, John Brown, Emily Walker, Matthew Moore, Sara Sayre, Jordan Young, Jenna Young, Kourtney Clines, Robert Clines, Kaitlyn Brown, Kristen Brown, Kyleigh Brown, Camden Walker, Ella Walker, Colten Walker, Ashley Newton, Brett Newton, and Hadley Newton.
Internment was held at the Grandview Cemetery at Long Pine, Nebraska under the direction of Hoch Funeral Home. Memorials were suggested to the Long Pine United Methodist Church, the Long Pine Veteran's Club or to the Long Pine Heritage House Museum in her name.
